FAQs

Read our answers to frequently asked questions about living and studying in Canada, an open-minded and multicultural country where you will feel welcome from the day you arrive.

Q: What’s it like to live in Canada?

A: Canada is home to people from around the world. You will live alongside international students like you and native Canadians. Over time you will learn to adapt to many different situations, from understanding social customs and culture to visiting the lively city of Victoria with your new friends.

Q: What if I feel homesick?

A: It is completely natural to miss your friends and family – most students feel homesick at some stage. The best thing to do is to talk to other students and make new friends through clubs or activities. You can also speak to one of our friendly student counsellors who will give you helpful tips and advice.

Q: What if I can't understand other people, or they can't understand me?

A: Getting used to speaking in and listening to a new language is not an easy thing to do, and it will happen in time. Try not to be afraid to make mistakes, this is all a part of your learning experience. Canadian people are open and friendly, so if you can't understand someone, all you have to do is ask them to repeat what they have said.

Q: How will I meet other students?

A: Royal Roads University has a small and friendly student community so it won’t take you long to make friends. The International Study Centre and the University will organize events and activities to help you settle in and make new friends. Joining clubs and organizations is a great way to meet students with similar interests to your own.

Q: Will I be able to find food from my home country?

A: Canada is a multicultural country with grocery stores that sell food from around the world. If you are looking for food that reminds you of home, or if you want to try something new, you will be able to find what you are looking for in one of many restaurants in nearby Victoria.

The faculty here is amazing. I have contact with all my professors, and I'm actually not a number, I'm a student, I have a name.
