Every student has a long and winding road from acceptance letter to graduation. For international students the road to graduation also includes learning a foreign language, understanding the customs of a new country and getting used to a different lifestyle.

In the following interview Manuel, an international student at the International Study Centre at Royal Roads University in Canada, talks about his student journey and why he chose to study abroad in Canada.

Question: Where are you from and what are you studying at Royal Roads?

Manuel: I’m from Venezuela and I’m pursuing a Master’s degree in Global Management.

Q: Why did you choose to get your graduate degree in Canada?

M: I chose to come to Canada to study because if you're going to work and study really hard here, Canada is going to open its doors to you and you're not going to have any problems finding a job. I'm planning to stay in Canada after graduating and apply for a three-year work permit. After that I'm going to try to find a job, and if I can, I'm going to apply for the permanent residence.

Q: Why did you choose Royal Roads University among other schools in Canada?

M: It's one of the most beautiful campuses in Canada where you can find people from all over the world. It has a nice basketball court in the recreation center where I play every day. It's an amazing place near the Olympic Mountains, ocean, castle and a forest.

Q: Can you tell anything about the Pre-Master’s Program at the university?

M: The Pre-Master’s Program is an excellent tool if you need some academic upgrading. You can take many courses like financial accounting, public speaking, communication, as well as critical thinking. In these courses, you can practice your mathematical, writing and communication skills. The program is based on a business model, and you also do research papers and business case studies. These kinds of things can help you to be better prepared for the Master of Global Management or another kind of program that you will take.

Q: What does Royal Roads University mean to you?

M: For me, Royal Roads University means my new home!
